Vacation ~ The Grand Canyon

Here are two of my three children taking in the Grand Canyon on a hike below the rim. We have been at the Grand Canyon for a few days recently. Amazing!! I am now sitting here in Durango Colorado. We are on the tail end of our vacation. We have really enjoyed being out West. We are driving an older RV and have had a couple breakdowns, it has been somewhat National Lampoon like but we are so thrilled with experiencing such a different landscape, that it is all worth it. What an experience it is to see the West for the first time! I can't even begin to explain but, can't wait to put it in painting. Tomorrow we are taking the Durango/Silverton Locomotive up to Silverton. I am really looking forward to it. We are all getting a bit homesick though. I am really missing painting. Can't wait to paint some of this western beauty, new to me.

Street Market Downtown Buildings painting a day

6"x6" oil on masonite. Man sitting at the Barr Street Market. It must not be Saturday, for the market isn't set up. Even, so, it makes a nice place to sit down and have lunch.

Garden Tool Shed Chicken Coop painting a day oil

sold
6"x6" oil on primed masonite. This is our garden/tool/catch all shed that many, many years ago used to be a chicken coop. In front of it is my perrenial garden (which I love, because I dont have to do much with it other than weed once in awhile. I am all about low maintenance with gardening, even then it is quite a bit of work. I think my dog is part cat too! I had to keep shoo-ing her out of the garden, she was trying to catch the butterflies in there and she is not as light on her feet like a cat, she is 75 lbs. and the garden can't take her tromping through it. Happy Sunday! Oh, if you are interested in the flowers, read on: Sedum (not in bloom yet), rose yarrow (the taller one), some kind of yellow wild flower that spreads a little bit and palace purple (in front, my favorite, in full sun they turn different shades of burgundy, gold, amber and purple and their leaves are shaped like a maple leaf, in August they shoot up sprays of fl0wers that look like baby's breath.

Still Life Fruit painting a day

sold
6"x6" oil on primed masonite. Fruit in my house usually doesn't last long, like most houses with children, I am sure. I was compelled to paint this with Cezanne in mind, but as I painted I think I may have gotten away from the angular brushstrokes that I started with. Probably because I didn't start out with that Cezanne inspiration till I was half way through this painting. Sometimes a painting meanders that way, like our minds. I will have to try this again with that in mind from the beginning. But, that is what I love in painting you can totally get lost with yourself in journey. I am really happy with the mood this evokes to me. I guess because I enjoyed the "journey" so much. When I look at it from across the room it has a strong feeling to it, I think it is the interesting color, which is hard to capture in a digital photo.

"Waiting" Old Pickup Truck painting a day oil

6"x6" oil on primed masonite. I like this moment in a painting. I am considering leaving it be in this raw, yet complete, place in time and moving on. It makes me think of the history of this beautiful truck, and what is left; it's handsome lines, and great form.

Old Pickup Trucks Workshop Vintage painting a day

sold
6"x6" oil on primed masonite. My dear husband was working in a smalltown the other day and this shop, with a variety of old pickup trucks outside, caught his eye. We both love old cars and trucks. He worked in that town again the other day. He could see me wanting to paint them so he brought my camara and took some great shots for me to look at. It was sunny so the lighting was great. Thank you Hon!

Storefront Shop House Dwell painting a day

6"x6" oil on primed masonite. This eclectic shop was converted from an older home in a historic neighborhood. Full of charm. I love these unique shops. You can wander through the house and each little room with creaky floors is full of little treasures old and new.

Independence Day American Flag 4th of July daily painting

sold

"Independence Day"

6"x6" oil on primed masonite. This flag stands outside our front window. Some days it rests, hanging straight down, some days it billows with a slight summer breeze and some days it waves straight out in the strong wind. I am thankful for the freedom we have to hang this flag in our yard.

Girl in the Garden flowers sundress painting a day

sold

6"x6" oil on primed masonite. This little girl walks to the beat of her own drum and I love that about her. "Matching" clothes are not her thing, sorry Garanimals(remember those?) Today she wore one of her brightly colored (my favorite) summer dresses paired up with jeans. Something caught her eye in the perennial garden which in turn caught my eye and was enough inspiration for today's painting.
