"Roses in the Alley"

These lovely antique roses brighten up what could be a rather ordinary alley.  The morning sun was all the inspiration I needed for painting in this historic neighborhood of Ft. Wayne.  Please note that this painting is still wet so there may be a bit of reflection of light in my photos.

Island Hike Oahu Palm Trees Daily Painting Landscape

"Island Hike"
6x6" oil on primed masonite
Hiking on Oahu for my husband and I was most likely a once in a lifetime event. Here we found a clearing on our way up to Manoa Falls. We read that it was a rugged trail, which it was. However, all our hiking in Southern Indiana made it a piece of cake. Of course the falls at the end were beautiful.

Colorado Cows Daily Oil Painting Black Angus

"Colorado Cows"
6x6" oil on primed masonite

The cows and lush green countryside were actually a welcome sight for us Midwesterners after traveling through the desert and canyons of Arizona for two weeks.  They just looked so content on the mountainside along the stream.

Girlfriends Beach Bikinis Happy Hour Daily Oil Painting Heidi Malott

"Girlfriend!"

6x6" oil on masonite

I could sit on the beach and paint for days on end.  Sometimes I get so into my work that I don't pay attention to the surf until it is inches from my easel!

Antique Toy Car Child Contemporary Impressionist Painting

"New Driver"
nfs
6x6" oil on primed masonite

This little car has seen many hours of "driving" from more than ten little children over a period of many years.  As old as the saying is, it still holds true, "they just don't make 'em like they used to".

The sunny day made for a pleasant painting experience.

Beachcombers Painting Ocean Figures Beach Impressionism

"The Beachcombers"
Sunset
6"x6" oil on primed masonite

Who doesn't like to stroll on the beach alongside the ocean?  Like I mentioned in a previous post of the surfers in Hawaii.  I am a land-locked girl and cannot get enough time by the ocean.  I think it is one of my favorite things to do.  Good for the soul as well.

Surfers Wait Surfing Hawaii Contemporary Painting

"First Waves"
6x6" oil on primed masonite

sold

Being from a land locked state, I was mesmerized by watching the surfers.  They would be up before the sun and out waiting for the first waves.  The morning sun would rise and you could see the surfers sitting on their boards bobbing up and down on the surf, waiting and conversing with each other.  What a difference from hitting the gym before work.  What a great way to start the day for your body, mind and soul.

Contemporary Impressionism Intersection at Dusk Small Town

sold
"Intersection at Dusk"
6"x6" oil on primed masonite

I can't put my finger on it, but there is something about dusk in the summertime.  The sky is still bright but the light around you is low and quickly fading.  The streetlights come on and the lights of a small town intersection seem so inviting.

Seascape Oil Painting Ocean Sunset East Coast Contemporary Impressionism

"East Coast Sunset"
Florida
6x6" oil on sanded art board

Dusk by the ocean is noisy with the surf and gulls feeding, but there is a sense of quiet at the day's end when the sky is softened in the fading light.

Impressionism Seascape Oil Painting Sailboat

"Sea Glass"
6x6" oil on sanded art board

This painting reminds me of one of my favorite things, sea glass.  The broken bits of paint remind me of one of my favorite painters also, Edgar Payne.  I love his work, especially his seascapes and his Western North American Landscapes.  If you have never seen his work I suggest you check him out online.  You are in for a treat!

special note:  I always like to suggest something with viewing impressionist paintings on your computer.  You may enjoy them in a different perspective, by stepping back about 3 paces.  Let me know what you think about this.

Colorado Landscape Contemporary Impressionism

"Silverton Landscape"
6"x6" oil on primed masonite

I will be honest, I get very bored painting the same location or season or anything for too long.  Winter is just beginning here in the Midwest, but I am ready to paint something other than the grays.  Which explains the beach scenes the last few days.   Don't get me wrong, I can find something that pulls me to paint just about anywhere and anytime.  I find that if I paint the same thing for too long I get in a rut and start to paint on autopilot.   So to shake it up I wanted to paint some scenes from a recent trip to Durango and Silverton, CO.

Impressionist Painting Children Beach Boy Child

"Child's Play"
6"x6" oil on primed masonite

A visit to the ocean is always special.  My kids can play all and I mean ALL day in the sand and water.

I enjoyed the softness of this little painting.  Kind of like the sweet little boy, very soft at heart.

First Snow Winter Impressionism Daily Painting

"First Snow"
6x6" oil on primed masonite

I could not wait to paint the first snow in the woods.  The sun was setting.  The few lingering leaves of fall "popped" off the blue shadows on the snow.  This contemprary impression has an abstract feel to it in my efforts to capture the moment without getting too detailed in all the trees.

I encourage you to notice how the painting becomes clearer as you step back a few feet rather than closely from your monitor.

Winter Fields Snowy Impressionism 8X8" Oil Painting

"Winter Patchwork"  8x8" oil on primed masonite

Happy New Year!  I hope your holidays were full of joy and promise of the new year.  I am looking forward to painting and sharing them with you here and on Dailypainters.com!

Today's little painting is "big".  I am amazed at how much larger these 8" squares look next to my usual 6x6" daily pieces.  The fields this time of year remind me of patchwork quilts.  Patches of snow and dried remains of  summer's harvest.
