Free Paintings Month of May see details on my blog

Early Spring - Frosty Fields
6x6" oil

Yes, you read that correctly!  After going through some of my paintings in the studio, I came up with the idea to give some paintings away.  Yes, I sound kinda crazy, and yes I might wish I didn't do this, but too late, I am going for it.

For one month (May 2015) If you buy a painting I will let you pick any available 6x6" painting from the years 2006, 2007, and 2008 and I will send it to you for free with your purchased painting.  Just use the buy now link and include in the message which painting you would like or you can send a separate email letting me know which one you want.  Please include the title AND date of which one you want, so I send the right one.

Sales are final, however, if you are not happy with your purchased painting let me know and you may return it and pick another.  additional postage will be charged.
USA and Canada only
(if you are elsewhere please email me and I can create a special invoice)

any further details of special subject to be described by Heidi Malott as needed

Thank You!  Let me know if you have any further questions.

Dragonfly Garden Jewel Art

"Garden Jewel"
6x6"
oil on masonite

A change of pace.  I don't remember the last time I have painted a dragonfly.  I just love these little creatures.  They seem like such an anomaly don't they?  Their iridescent colors and aeronautical design, amazing!  Anyway, gardening season is upon us and I would like to do more garden related paintings so I will keep this in mind while I am pulling weeds.

Impressionist Landscape Green Fields Spring Summer

The skies were so clear and brisk.  The greens seem to grow before your eyes in Spring.  I am really enjoying the burst of color after a looong winter.

Spring Landscape Contemporary Impressionism

"Early Spring Colors"
6x6" oil

The clouds were rolling by quickly on this brisk spring day.  The new greens are really starting to pop.  This was a fun and a fast paced painting with thin washes and thin layers of color.  You will have to trust me on this, the picture here does not do the original painting justice.  The colors have more subtle shifts of color and the value has more contrast.  The blues don't look so glowing, more realistic or atmospheric.  I gave up trying to take a better one.  Maybe when the painting is dry I will try again.  :)

Coca Cola Vintage Sign on Brick Building al Fresco Cafe

"Refresh"
6x6" oil

I am so happy to post this little painting.  I actually started it years ago and was never really happy with part of it.  I changed the foreground and bumped up the values and am much more pleased with the results.

This downtown scene is similar to towns across America.  Vintage signage painted on old brick buildings are still enjoyed by many.  However, many of them are fading away from time and in some cases change.

Delicate Skies Serene Landscape Original Oil Painting

sold
"Delicate Skies"
6x6" oil

I used one small brush for this painting.  The size of the brush I grab for a painting, I find, really does dictate the direction of a piece.  I hold the long handled brush at the end and paint at arms length with out bending the wrist.  This keeps me from getting caught up in the details throughout the painting.  Then at the very end I may use the small brush a bit more like a pencil and put in a bit of detail, like here in the trees and a wisp here and there in the clouds.
With a larger or wider brush, my favorite, the painting has broader, bolder brushstrokes that really help keep me from getting to tight with details.  If you look through my paintings you can really see if I used a large or small brush.  Very rarely do I use more than one size brush in a painting.  Not to say there is a right or wrong way, just a preference of mine.
Have a Great weekend!

Tree Line in the Golden Sun Original Oil Paintings

not available for purchase
part of giveaway in 2017

"Golden Treeline"

6x6" oil

I am really glad to be back at the easel.  I felt quite rusty at first but I now feel like I am getting back into a rhythm.   The kids will be out of school in about a month so I will try to keep up this pace.  Looking ahead, my June and July is so chock full with graduations, weddings, enjoying the kid's time off etc.  My goal is to carve out a bit of painting time throughout the long awaited summer season.
Enjoy your day!

Violet Clouds at Dusk Contemporary Impressions

"Violet Clouds"
6x6" oil

I divided and attempted to conquer a busy, detailed scene by simplifying and blocking in the bigger shapes.  Something about these scenes cut down to the bare bones is very relaxing and harmonious.

Front Porch Homestead Painting Contemporary Impressionism

sold
"Front Porch"
6x6 oil

Who doesn't find a front porch relaxing?  Especially if there is a porch swing and maybe a glass of ice tea.  I am so ready for summer.  I painted this in my studio today for it is very windy and rainy outside.  This scene is from some reference pics I took in my neck of the woods last summer.

Seaside Skies Spring Vacation Series

sold
"Seaside Skies"

6x6" oil

This is why I never tire of painting.  Each one is a journey and even if you paint the same subject matter numerous times they can still take on a life of their own.  Once I am inspired to paint scene I go about it with my usual technical aspects of creating a painting but then, as if switching gears, the process of painting seems to move on from the technical side and on to a more creative side that gives the painting a mood or feeling.  I know that may sound hokey, but I honestly think that is what inspires me to pick up a brush year after year.  Of course some paintings don't turn out well, or I get complete "painter's block" on occasion, but after many years I have learned to enjoy the process or journey whatever the outcome.

Ocean Sunset Beach Palm Trees Spring Break Series

"A Good Day"

6x6" oil on primed masonite

I remember long ago one of my art professors said to avoid painting trite things and for the most part I agree.  There are some things that don't relay well in a painting.  A glorious sunset on the beach may be trite to some.  But for me...never.  There is no substitute for enjoying the real thing.  However, I am always up for the challenge of painting how the setting sun transforms the sky.

Family Beach Time Spring Break Series

"Family Beach Time"
6x6" oil

I love the warm colors of the sand and the figures against the cool blues of the ocean.

For some reason, probably a mix of human error and digital technology the blues are not as teal as the original painting.  If I figure it out I will post a better picture.  If you like this, I think you would be more pleased with it in person.

Have a Great weekend!

Watching Seagulls Girl on Beach Spring Break Oil Painting Art

"Watching Seagulls"
6x6" oil

This gestural painting was a lot of fun.  My goal was to capture a fleeting moment in as few brushstrokes as possible to keep it fresh and simple.  My favorite part is the depth of the sky.
Have a good one!

Seawall Sunset Spring Break Beach Paintings Heidi Malott

"Seawall Sunset"

6x6" oil on masonite board

After a much needed break from a long cold, snowy winter, I am back in the studio feeling refreshed and ready to paint.  Too much time has passed since I have posted anything online.

This view is from the beach looking up to the sunset behind the seawall.  My camera does not do the yellows justice.  In person, they are a warmer yellow orange.  Thanks for stopping by.  I hope Spring is bringing warmer weather your way!
